AME Coaching

AME Coaching: Supporting student Autonomy, Motivation and Engagement at school

I am the proud creator of ‘AME Coaching’ - a 1:1 intervention to support young people with school motivation and educational engagement, using Motivational Interviewing.

The programme offers training and supervision to key adults in secondary schools who are working to support student autonomy, motivation and engagement (AME).

The research evidence-base for AME Coaching is growing:

  • One study showed promising findings regarding feasibility of implementation (Conway, 2023)
  • A qualitative evaluation found positive student outcomes reported by AME Coaches (Mullings-Wong and Coley, pending peer review)
  • A thesis study (in progress) will conduct a realistic evaluation to explore intervention outcomes, mechanisms for change and student views.

We have trained two cohorts in Wandsworth and we are preparing for our third cohort 2026-2027. It is my dream to develop a train-the-trainer model so that AME Coaching can be shared more widely with other EP services and schools, with the ultimate aim to support more young people to feel motivated and engaged at school at a national level...
